PENDLE Council has set up three special recycling banks for empty drink cartons under a new trial scheme.

People can take milk, fruit and juice cartons to special collection banks at Asda in Colne, Goitside car park in Nelson and Boot Street in Earby.

The council has set up the new carton recycling scheme with Tetra Pak Ltd and ACE (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment) in a six month trial.

Carole Taylor, the council's waste services manager, said: "Pendle people are great recyclers; most already recycle as much of their waste as they can.

"Plenty of people have been asking about how to recycle their waxed drinks cartons too and so we've introduced these three special banks."

The Reverent Ed Saville used the drinks carton bank in Nelson.

He said: "I'm so pleased that the banks are in place. We used to compost our drinks cartons, but the liners don't rot down."

The cartons are recycled into things like plasterboard liner, strong paper bags and envelopes.

Mrs Taylor added: "If the initial six month trial is successful and people are using them, then we may get more drinks carton recycling across Pendle."

Cartons, made from paper, a renewable resource, are clearly better than plastic bottles, made from oil and with a much higher carbon footprint!

I used to get my milk delivered by the milkman until he decided he couldn't ge out of bed early enough in the morning. He started delivering after I'd gone to work so the milk was off by the time I got in. Supermarkets all the way now, his own fault.

One good way to cut down on plastic cartons is to go back to the good old days of having your milk delivered by the milkman. The bottles are reused over and over again. And if delivered buy electric milk float as it used to be better again on the environment. And last but not least the milk is fresh every day it also tastes a lot better and is not full of preservatives. As well as all this you will be supporting your local farms as well.
