Walking the way to bring visitors to Colne

1:20pm Friday 19th March 2010

A PUBLIC meeting will be held tonight in Colne to find out if residents support it becoming a ‘walkers’ town’.

Hundreds of walkers descend on the Pendle hill town every year, enroute to picturesque treks across Wycoller and Laneshawbridge.

Now townsfolk will be asked if Colne should be accredited by Walkers Are Welcome, a national voluntary committee.

Hebden Bridge, Mytholmyoyd and Richmond in Yorkshire, have all acquired the status. Colne and District Committee wants to know if there is enough support in the town to make a bid.

Coun Tony Greaves, who will chair the Colne Town Hall meeting, said: “We believe Colne and the surrounding countryside has something special, and are keen to encourage more visitors.”

The meeting starts at 5.30pm.
