POLICE are calling for residents to be aware of burglaries involving 'lock snapping'.

Police took to Facebook to warn of the increase in break-ins using the method, and shared advice on how to avoid falling victim to the scheme.

A Police spokesman said: "There has recently been a spate of burglaries in Colne and the surrounding area.

"Several of these burglaries have involved the offenders using a ‘lock snapping’ method to gain entry.

"However there is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to avoid your locks being snapped.

"You can purchase anti snapping barrels from most DIY or security stores and also off the internet. The lock can be tampered with but entry cannot be gained to your property, at least not through that point.

"Please check your locks, check relatives and neighbours locks or ask for advice.

"Remember, if you see anything suspicious, please contact the Police on 101 or if you suspect a burglary in progress, ring 999."
