RECKLESS drivers are putting lives at risk say residents calling for new cameras to be placed on a busy road.

Several worried residents have raised concerns about the ongoing problem with vehicles passing through red traffic lights at the junction of Halifax Road and Colne Road, Brierfield.

They have demanded that cameras be installed on the lights to record the 'dangerous activity' and help identify the culprits.

Councillors discussed the problem at a crunch meeting of Brierfield and Reedley's committee, who agreed to pass the matter onto Lancashire County Council, the authority responsible for the area's roads.

Cllr Naeem Hussain Ashraf said he feared there would be a 'serious accident' if action is not taken to address the traffic light jumping and speeding.

He said: "The problem of people jumping traffic light cameras has been a real issue for a while.

"This is a particular problem at Halifax Road and Colne Road, but the county council haven't done anything about it.

"There are problems with people in high-powered cars speeding also and it would be good to see some more speed cameras installed on the roads.

"There have been a number of accidents and near misses and I fear lives could be put at risk if action isn't taken."

Cllr Nadeem Ahmed has also raised concerns about a number of youths in fast vehicles speeding on Carr Road and Manchester Road, Nelson.

He called for a speed indicator to be reinstalled on Manchester Road and for new cameras to be placed on both roads to tackle the problem 'before someone is injured'.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "The traffic signals at the Halifax/Burnley Road junction in Brierfield are due to be replaced as part of the Burnley/Hyndburn/Pendle Growth Corridor programme, which will help to deter poor driver behaviour by improving traffic flow at the junction.

"However, we are also currently investigating the options for installing red light cameras on a number of traffic signals in Lancashire and this is one of the junctions that has been identified that may benefit from red light enforcement.

"We have agreed to install a speed indicator device (SpID) on Carr Road/Manchester Road in Nelson and if necessary will consider further options to address people's concerns about speeding following this.

"We are also investigating options to add a further site on Carr Road where speed indicator signs could be installed and are due to discuss this with Pendle Borough Council and the police in the next of our regular meetings."
