COUNCILLORS have called for redevelopment of an ‘untidy’ area of their town.

Colne and District Committee members agreed to look into possible options into improving the former tower ballroom and the former Sugar House nightclub, in Keighley Road, Colne.

The nightclub has been closed since April after the former owner gave up its lease.

The Tower Building has been closed for several years, privately owned, and is up for sale for £249,995 through Empire Estates.

Committee members discussed the possibility of the sites becoming apartments and a car park, however no planning applications have been lodged.

Cllr Joe Cooney, who sits on the committee and represents Vivary Bridge on the council, said something must be done on the sites.

He said: “The areas are one of the main gateways into Colne and we really don’t want it looking untidy for visitors.

“We were thinking of ways to improve the area and we believe apartments and parking would be ideal.

“It would help with housing issues and also reinvent the area, making it more appealing.

“Converting the building into apartments would see the tower ball room retain its unique look.

“The nightclub would have to be demolished because its not in a good condition.

“I can only see a car park being of any use there.

“We want to attract people to Colne and energising sites like this.”

The Tower Building was built in 1900 and was originally a tax office.

Over the years it has been transformed from a ballroom to a family home.

Within a council meeting document, officers have been asked to submit a report on possible options for the redevelopment of the sites.

A Pendle Council spokesman said: “Pendle Council can confirm that the Sugar House in Keighley Road, Colne, closed in April after the former occupier gave up the lease.

“Colne and District Committee requested that the Council looks at ways the prominent area could be redeveloped to improve it.

“The council owns the Sugar House but does not own the former Tower Ballroom next door which is currently for sale.

“A report on possible options for the sites is expected to be taken to a future Area Committee meeting.”
