DOCTORS who were treating a teenager after he crashed his car into a bike discovered a cyst on his brain.

Jack Holt, 15, had a ‘lucky escape’ after coming away with cuts and bruises when he hit the front windscreen of the moving car in Talbot Street, Colne on Saturday afternoon.

But during a check-up at Royal Blackburn Hospital he was found to have a cyst on the brain and is due to return for further tests this week.

Mum Tania Holt, 36, said Jack was crossing the road and did not see the car.

“He came off the front of the bike and hit the windscreen,” she said.

“He shattered the windscreen of the car and the front wheel of the bike has been bent. It is a write-off.

“They took him to hospital as he had a head injury. He had no broken bones but they discovered this cyst.

“It is lucky he had the accident in a way otherwise we would not have known and would have just carried on.

“It is worrying. They have said it could be nothing or it could be something so we just have to wait now.

“We are keeping an open mind about it.”

She said the Park High School student, who has four siblings, was ‘shaken up’ and has vowed he will wear a helmet from now on.

“If he had landed a couple of inches up and hit the front of the windscreen it would be a different story,” she said.

“We were picking glass out of his hair last night.

“He wasn’t wearing a helmet and he regrets that now.

“He won’t go out without one now.

“It will be a while before he goes out on his bike.

“It has scared him. He’s really shaken up by it.”

Jack is due to visit the doctor this week to book in for an MRI scan.

PC Nigel Keates said: “The young lad was extremely lucky only having minor cuts and bruises and undoubtedly a very sore head.

“Please consider wearing a cycle helmet and take extra care when exiting junctions.

“Wearing a cycle helmet may not be cool in some quarters but it can certainly alter your chances.

Stressing the driver was not at fault he said: “Most certainly a message to motorists that driving at a sensible speed can mean the difference between death and cuts and bruises if the worst happens.”
