NEW speed bumps are set to be installed on an access-only road in a bid to combat ‘rat run’ traffic.

Greenfield Road, in Colne, has been blighted by vehicles using it as a cut through between Whitewalls Drive and Colne Road.

Consultation forms were sent to Greenfield Road residents with possible solutions to deter motorists from using it.

Now Pendle Council will look to replace the seven speed bumps and install a further three on the half-a-mile stretch.

Cllr Graham Roach, of Pendle Council, who lives in the road, said the problem of extra traffic had been going on for years.

He said: “The people who live on Greenfield have campaigned bitterly about the issue and we have tried traffic measures to reduce the numbers coming through the road.

“I hope the speed bumps will help take the numbers down.”

A council spokesman said the consultation showed residents were also interested in putting in a gate to stop people using the narrow country road, which is also a national cycle way.

Cllr Roach said: “We used to have a gate but it kept being left open and then it was removed by someone and now it's missing. The road is narrow, it’s only a single track."

The consultation also included road hump signs on the road.

Tricia Wilson, project co-ordinator for the council, said: “We’ve responded to requests from people living on Greenfield Road to do something about speeding cars using their access only road as a rat run.

“Motorists have been taking no notice of the signs so we’ve consulted with residents on how best to tackle the problem.

“We’re now discussing details with them before putting the new measures in place.”

A council spokesman added: “At present, we plan to rebuild the seven existing speed bumps which have worn down and install three new sleeping policeman style road humps. This plan may change once we have spoken with residents, responses from residents are still coming in.”
