The application is seeking permission to sell alcohol from 8am-11pm Monday to Saturday and 8am-9pm on Sundays.

After a consultation exercise on the application, the council’s licensing committee received 15 objections, including a petition with a further 26 names.

Many residents said that the area was already the subject of alcohol-related disorder, and that it was a ‘quiet residential area’.

The petition opposed the licence application on the grounds of the prevention of crime, disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance and the protection of children from harm.

The petition said: “The proposed sale of alcohol from 8am-11pm will fuel public disorder and increase noise and risk of physical and verbal abuse.”

It also cited the risk of children witnessing the problems of alcohol-induced behaviour on their way to and from school.

Another objection stated: “There are already problems with youths around the cemetery and graveyard.

“This will create more problems for authorities and police.”

Maureen Lee, who has owned Colne Cemetery chip shop for 11 years, said: “I can speak from experience as to the types of crime I have experienced.

“I have had my shop window broken on three separate occasions.”

Mr Ahmed said he would install CCTV and notices would be displayed requesting customers not to cause nuisance.
