MORE than 60 people have signed a petition to try and stop recycling facilities being removed from Asda supermarket's car park in Colne.

Pendle Council has been in talks with Asda in a bid to keep the skips, but Colne Town Cllr Ash Sutcliffe fears the vital recycling facility might still be withdrawn.

The supermarket has cited abuse by trade contractors as a reason why they need to shut the facility and enforcement action has been carried out.

“Colne is surrounded by some of the most glorious countryside in this nation and I fear there will be a huge rise in fly tipping if this closure is allowed to go ahead," said Cllr Sutcliffe, who set up the petition last week.

Last year Colne residents recycled 24 tonnes of paper, 14 tonnes of glass and two tonnes of cans and tins.

Colne currently has two other recycling sites, Sainsbury’s, in Windsor Street, and the car park behind the Red Lion in the town centre.

Cllr Sutcliffe, proprietor of Live Like the Boy in Colne town centre, said: “We can’t just stand by and let this happen."

He is now urging Colne residents to sign the Facebook petition and make their views known.
