A MAN detained by police after a getaway car ran out of petrol has been charged with shoplifting and driving offences following the theft of meat from the Tesco store in Colne.

Police were alerted to the incident in Market Street at around 8.30pm on Thursday when an officer passing through the town was told of the theft.

The officer then discovered the car being used as a getaway vehicle had run out of petrol in School Lane, Laneshawbridge.

The police helicopter and dogs were brought in to help conduct the search in a rural area and two people were arrested.

A 34-year-old man has been charged with shoplifting, driving without due care and attention, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

He is due to appear before Burnley Magistrates Court on June 2.

A 35-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of shoplifting has been released without charge.
