A FAMILY has been left heart-broken after their pet dog was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Colne.

Farmer and B&B owner Stephen Boothman said a man driving a white Citroen van came down Red Lane and hit his beloved Benson, a Jack Russell, as he was locking a gate.

He said the driver wasn't looking at the road and was reaching into his glovebox. Benson, who was on a lead, was killed instantly but the driver did not stop.

He walked the family’s other dog, Hector, back home and returned to the scene to remove Benson’s body while his wife Rachel called police.

Stephen’s daughter, Lucy Booth-man, penned a heartfelt appeal on Facebook, pleading with the driver to come forward.

The 25-year-old hairdresser said: “This isn’t a witchhunt but I want this man to know what he’s done and to apologise.

“Our family has always kept animals and our dogs were part of our family.”

Lucy said Benson was standing behind the painted white line on the road and it was lucky her dad was not hit by the van as well.

Stephen, who runs the luxury Blakey Hall Farm B&B with his wife, is said to be shaken.

Rachel said: “Lots of people have shared Lucy’s appeal and it is a comfort to know that so many people care.

“Everyone has been most kind but nothing will bring back my little mate.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police received a call at around 9.50am on Friday, September 5, following reports that a small van had collided with a dog.

“It is believed that the van has failed to stop and sadly the dog died following the collision.

“Police would urge anyone with information about the van to get in touch with them on 101 quoting log reference LC-20140905-0372 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
