A DRUG dealer jailed earlier this year has been ordered to pay back £17,000 of proceeds from his illegal activities.
Abdus Wahid, 29, formerly of Albert Street, Brierfield, is currently serving eight months in prison for possession with intent to supply cannabis.
He pleaded guilty to the charges at Burnley Crown Court in April.
On Friday at the same court, Lancashire police’s Pennine division’s financial investigation unit was successful in its application to have the proceeds from his crimes confiscated.
The judge accepted he had benefited from his crime to the value of £17,500 and he was ordered to repay the full amount within six months or face a further nine months behind bars.
Wahid was arrested in August 2010 after police stopped his red Honda Civic in Arthur Street, Nelson.
He attempted to flee on foot and was seen to throw a carrier bag containing skunk cannabis, snap seal bags and cash into a nearby yard.
He was arrested a short time later and the carrier bag was rec-overed by police.
DC Tony Morris said: “As this case shows, people will not profit from crime in Lancashire.
"The Proceeds of Crime Act is one of many tools we are using to come down hard on offenders.
“I hope this sends out a warning. If we find you with cash that you cannot account for, you will be targeted.”
Courts do not deal with con-fiscation at sentencing.
Following a conviction police often investigate the finances of people they suspect obtained money illegally and ask the courts to force them to hand the money over. All money raised is spent tackling crime and anti-social behaviour, with local communities receiving a share through Community Cashback.

The only people living in "LALA" land are those with the drug addiction, or am I dreaming??? And how many move on to stronger drugs because Cannabis can't give them "their buzz" !!!! So if its illegal, lets make it legal ?????? Sounds like you've had one spliff too many will12, you are very confused. Drugs aren't alike and you don't move from one to another to get a better buzz. People try other drugs for a different buzz. Alcohol has a huge buzz, which is probably why it's the biggest killer drug in the world. Cannabis shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as other drugs, let alone banned. Anyway, I just hope one day that you don't need medical cannabis. Also I would move to another country where I'd be allowed to use cannabis and be treated like an adult at the same time, but there is the small issue of my job/family/friends that are here. I didn't choose to get born in this redundant country.
