A CONCERNED resident is calling for double yellow lines on her street to stop serious accidents from happening.

Virginia Crewe, 65, who has lived on Holden Road for eight years, wants proper parking arrangements made for neighbouring businesses, including the multi-million pound Northlight Brierfield Mills complex, to stop them parking outside residents’ houses.

A number of residents on Holden Road, Brierfield, have made complaints to Pendle Council and Lancashire County Council about making the cul-de-sac safe for pedestrians and road users.

One resident has asked for double yellow lines to be brought around the junction at Holden Road and Clitheroe Road.

Now the former career advisor at Ribblesdale High School said: “For the last four and five years we have needed yellow lines on our cul-de-sac because cars park right on the corner of the junction and outside residents' homes.

“You can’t see to get in or out of your drives.

“There are children, old people and wheelchair users who cross that way and struggle to see past the parked cars and it’s dangerous.

“I contacted the borough council and they have told me it’s not dangerous even though two road accidents have occurred in less than a year.”

Cllr Naeem Hussain Ashraf, who represents the area, said: “I have received a couple of emails from residents about the issue and have asked Lancashire County Council to look into it.

“There will be more parking available when Northlight is built in a few months time.

“But I also agree with the residents that this is a pressing issue and I’m hoping that council officers will be looking into it as soon as they can."

Harvey Danson, area highways manager for Lancashire County Council, said: “A proposal to introduce parking restrictions around the junction of Holden Road and Clitheroe Road is one of a number of changes to traffic regulations in the district which are currently under consideration, with the next step being to carry out formal consultation.”

“We support these measures as we recognise parked vehicles can make it difficult to pull out of Holden Road, however the safety record at the junction is good and we will need to consider this scheme alongside others which may take priority due to a history of people being hurt in collisions.

“There may currently be extra pressure on parking in this area due to the Northlight development, however substantial off-street parking is a key feature of the plans for the completed scheme.”
