YOUNGSTERS took part in a canoe challenge to raise money for charity.

The year eight pupils from Marsden Heights Community College and social group Mum 2 Mum travelled six miles along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal as part of the Wet Bandits Canoe Challenge to raise funds for Age UK Lancashire.

The group set off from the Inn on the Wharf in Burnley and finished at Brierfield Mill.

The charity has been working with the schools on different projects to help young people learn about the challenges people face as they get older.

Mashuq Hussain, senior youth and community worker at Marsden Heights, said: “The pupils were really excited to help raise money for charity and thought this was a great way to do it.

“None of them had any previous canoeing experience which made it even harder but on the day with the help of instructor Matthew Hindley they all picked it up well and were able to finish the course and most importantly really enjoyed it.”

The pupils, who are hoping to raise more than £500, also created a care wall and presented information about the issues facing the elderly.
