In a statement read to the inquest at Burnley Magistrates’ Court, Mr Hussain's father, Rasab said his son had previously been very fit and healthy, but that had changed after he was violently assaulted in an incident in Brierfield in June 2011.

The injuries he sustained affected his mobility, he found walking difficult and he relied on crutches.

Mr Hussain said his son was in ‘constant pain’ and became increasingly frustrated as he had difficulty performing tasks such as putting shoes and socks on, relying on the support of his family.

He had seen his GP and was treated for post-traumatic stress.

His son also took prescribed medicines as a result of his injuries but the family were not aware that he was using illegal drugs.

He added that his son had never said he wished to end his own life and had spent a day with his family on June 30.

On the day of his death Mr Hussain had told his family he was popping out for some fresh air but a short time later the family were informed he had been found collapsed on the street.

Toxicology reports compiled by pathologist Richard Prescott found Mr Hussain had significant amounts of heroin, cocaine and the prescribed medication anitripyline in his system.

East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor concluded that Mr Hussain died a drug-related death.
