Family's tribute to Burnley man killed in Pendle crash

GENUINE AND KIND: Peter Lawson GENUINE AND KIND: Peter Lawson

A FAMILY has paid tribute to a man killed in a motorbike smash as “one in a million”.

Peter Lawson, 54, died after his Honda CB 600cc was involved in a head-on collision in Gisburn Road, Blacko, on Monday.

Today, family members remembered “loving, genuine” Mr Lawson, who lived in Burnley.

In a statement, his partner Sally and daughter Gemma said: “Peter was a loving, genuine man who was a motorbike fanatic.

“He was generous and kind, a friend to everyone and loved by many.

“He was one in a million. He will be sadly missed by everyone.

"This has left a massive hole in everyone's hearts.”

He also leaves a granddaughter, Bethany.

Police said Mr Lawson had attempted to overtake a number of vehicles in Gisburn Road before the head-on crash with another vehicle, at around 2.30pm.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene and the other driver was airlifted to the Royal Blackburn Hospital suffering from multiple injuries to his head and shoulders, and a suspected fractured back.

Today, a police spokesman said his injuries were not life-threatening and he was in a stable condition.

The smash that killed Mr Lawson is the latest accident in Gisburn Road in recent years.

In May 2008, a 59-year-old motorcyclist was critically injured after hitting a wall.

It led local county councillor Mike Calvert to demand highways officers take action to make the road safer.

He said: “This is a known danger road. There have been accidents involving other vehicles, some literally by people going too fast, and some where pedestrians have been involved.”

In September 2007, Christopher Lees, 41, was killed after being flung from his motorbike following a crash in the road.

Shocked to read this. Very nice, well humoured chap who always seemed to have a smile on his face. Thoughts are with his family.

Why don't people drive and ride bikes slower?
People are always in a hurry, they feel they must overtake, which only saves minutes on the journey. Is it worth it?
Is it worth it to ruin the lives of your family?
People never seem to get the message until it is too late, and then you have such tragic results.
Another wasted life caused by the need to speed.

Sorry councillor Calvert but your efforts will be wasted. It's not the road thats at fault its the drivers who use it and don't drive for the road conditions. You only have to look at other roads around the area where 'improvements' have been made and accidents still occur.

I find your comments on this article completely one sided and un called for "Tony Wales". Where in this article does it say that this gentleman was speeding? NOWHERE!! It says he was attempting to overtake a number of vehicles.
Can I just point out to you that when you are on a motorbike you dont need to be ovetaking because you are rushing but mearley just cutting out all the traffic in which I would say the majority of motorcyclists do. Why? Because they can. You stated that this accident was caused by speed. NO it wasnt, it was caused by a head on collision!!!!!!!!!Do
nt just jump to conclusions you obviously know nothing about!

The number of times this road has claimed a life have been well documented in our 'local' newspapers. I can only assume that some people either never read them, or just ignore what they read about accidents.

To SPEED is to go faster than the road conditions allow or are safe, not always to break the speed limit. If the person had not overtaken, he would still be alive today. How much time do you save by overtaking?
The inquest will provide the facts.

I've known Peter for a few years now - my dad Stuart works for him. He was always a pleasant and friendly bloke. A good friend of mine was killed on this road 8 years ago, like Peter he was 'overtaking' NOT 'speeding' in exactly the same spot on the same Bank Holiday weekend. My heart goes out to Peter's family and it is about time that the Highways council does something about this danger spot BEFORE someone else gets killed!!
