ANOTHER stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is to be given a new lease of life.

Waterways chiefs have announced that the canal through Hapton will benefit from a partnership project promising major improvements to the tow-path and embankments.

The £27,000 scheme is being paid for by Lancashire Environmental Fund and Lancashire County Council and is being championed by British Waterways.

The works are now underway and over the next week canal users will see wider and waterproofed towpaths and cleaner surfaces for cyclists and walkers.

Nick Smith, British Waterways external funding officer said the scheme involves surfacing 1.2km of towpath between Higher Shuttleworth and Manchester Road.

He added: "This stretch of towpath has recently been upgraded and stoned as part of a £180,000 repairs programme, which has improved the lifespan and safety of the embankment.

"This funding will now add value to the project and complete the works to a higher standard."

The earlier works involved embankment strengthening, vegetation clearance and permanent mooring bollards.

Projects have been completed in Brierfield and Barrowford to clean up the canal environment and plans for a new housing complex, near Burnley's Straight Mile section of the waterway, have been unveiled.

Great news. Just need to fish some of those supermarket trollies out now that have been in there 20 years.

Well I hope they do a better job than when they did Barden. Plants are pushing through the tarmac and the edges are breaking up because they weren't finished off.

But who cares? They have been ticked off as a job well done, and the suits in the offices can sit back and count their bonus payments for meeting targets.

Great point! Perhaps the local council and BW will address that issue next.
The Save Our Waterways campaign believe that it is a good investment for local authorities to take pride in their local waterway, as a clear navigation and well kept towpaths attract more visitors and more visitors mean more jobs and trade.
The LCC is to be congratulated for this initiative and SOW hoope that more local councils will follow their example.

Hope they are not paying contractors to do this work.Get the dossers who have been on the dole for over 2 years to do this work. There should be loads OF THEM ,then get the local courts to send the criminals to do the heavey and dangerous work.

Would be nice to have the layabouts fix the canals.IT WONT EVER HAPPEN OF COURSE.
