SEVERAL simple measures would improve parking for shoppers and workers in congested Barrowford, say parish councillors.
Community leaders have staged a public meeting amid growing concerns over a serious lack of spaces in the village.
And an action plan has been produced which supporters say would provide a low-cost solution to the problem.
One measure suggested following the meeting includes extending limited-waiting parking along a wider stretch of Gisburn Road.
Also suggested is altering the time limit for residents-only parking schemes, particularly in the Newbridge area, to allow other motorists to use bays between 9am and 5pm.
Coun John Pope, parish council chairman, said: “It seems to us that without spending huge amounts of money, significant improvements to car parking for visitors, shoppers and business people can be achieved.”
Extra parking is set to be created in the Barrowford and Higherford area with the opening, later this year, of the new Booth’s supermarket.
An extension of Pendle’s disc parking scheme – which usually allows a two to three hour stay – will be employed during opening hours.
Coun Pope added: “The current residents’ parking schemes, particularly around the Newbridge area, mean that on-street parking is not available to shoppers even though most of the parking areas are virtually empty all day when the residents are out at work.”
Parish councillors are now set to lobby the borough council’s parking section over their proposals.
