David Cameron pledges his support to reform the bail laws in memory of Jane Clough

PRIME Minister David Cameron has pledged his support for a campaign to reform the bail laws - in memory of a murdered East Lancashire nurse.

Jane Clough, from Barrowford, was stabbed to death by former lover Jonathan Vass in July 2010, while he was on bail accused of repeatedly raping her.

Her parents John and Penny Clough have campaigned to overturn existing bail legislation since the 26-year-old’s tragic death.

At the first session of Prime Minister’s Questions for 2012, Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, asked for a progress report on the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill, currently at the committee stage in the House of Lords.

Mr Cameron said that there was a ‘strong case for changing the law’, which the Cloughs have been pursuing through their ongoing Justice for Jane campaign.

An amendment to the bill, proposed by Labour MP Helen Goodman, should allow for prosecutors to appeal to a High Court judge, if a crown court judge releases a defendant on bail.

Mr Cameron added: “I hope this will improve the law, be more helpful to victims and give some satisfaction to the family.”

Mr Stephenson, after consulting the nurse’s family, has previously tabled a Private Members Bill, supporting the same provision.

The Cloughs were also remain angry that the rape prosecution was not proceeded with, following Vass’s murder conviction.

But in December it was announced that new guidance would be sent out to prosecutors, urging them to consult with families before making similar decisions in future.

it is more than a joke now in playing these sad events to get what changes they want to statute rules to give them more power.

Have the parents and relatives involed ever thought the whole thing has been a set up?

So glad that things are starting to change after all that Jane's parents have been through. It still makes me feel so sad when I think about Jane and what happened to her. Really well done to her parents/family/frien
ds for being so strong and persistent.

study the psychological reports for the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe. Then put the same effort into researching Michael Ryan and the Dunblain incident and make your own conclusion.

then look at all the footie disasters and research the same and you will see revealed a serious series of sinister patterns...

Why are you drawing such ridiculous parallels to this story? This is about a brave and proud mother and father who have been to a place in their lives that most of us will never thankfully go and have worked harder than you or I probably ever have in changing a system that is so clearly wrong.

Instead of coming out with such rubbish which is quite frankly pointless and disrespectful why not acknowledge and congratulate such a huge achievement?

not that i wish to ruffel any feathers, but....

i do believe common law without statute interference gave the judiciary all the power required to ensure such as this was not a normal incident.

When the CPS are in control of the judiciary and legal system then you get this sort of event, because high level networks require reason to further position statutes over law.

Sad times such as these are opportunities to think outside the box in order real change can be made which will acheive the aims.

its not the law failing it is the statutes of the corporate realm interfering with justice that is the problem, but still you cannot see.

Lifeinthemix,I like you have doubts about things like 7/7 but this case is quite clear to me. Man who was on bail for allegedly raping his ex-girlfriend, then he murdered her and is now serving a life sentence. Can you tell me how this bail law change will further the agenda of "our leaders"
