A SELFLESS volunteer from Pendle who has spent three years working for the Alzheimer’s Society has received royal recognition.

Joanne Duffy, 22, from Barrowford, was the guest of Princess Alexandra at a glittering awards ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

For the last three years, Joanne has lent her time at support groups for people living with the condition, and their carers.

She has also provided a friendly ear for carers and been involved in several fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns.

Her efforts have earned her a William Brooks Award, which are handed out annually by the society to those who make remarkable contributions to dementia care.

Joanne said: “‘I’m thrilled to have won the award. Volunteering is very rewarding. I have made friends, it has built up my confidence and improved my knowledge about dementia and its effects.”

The East Lancashire branch of the society has a busy support office at Lodge House in Cow Lane, Burnley, and staff there said the presentation was well-deserved.

Stephen Hughes, the society’s support service manager for East Lancashire, said: “Joanne truly deserves this award. All of our volunteers are committed to improving the lives of people living with dementia and their carers, and Joanne is a wonderful ambassador of that work.

“She is a really valued member of our team and nothing is ever too much trouble for her.”

An estimated 6,000 people live with efffects of dementia daily. Princess Alexandra presented the award in her capacity as the society’s patron.
