M65 smash: Barrowford woman, 78, 'drove wrong way'

THE MOTORISTS injured in a head-on crash on the M65 yesterday have been named by police.

Officers said the driver of the Vauxhall Corsa, travelling east on the westbound carriageway, was June Murray, 78, of Bankhouse Street, Barrowford.

And Robert Nuttall, 52, of Gisburn Road, Barrowford, has been confirmed as the driver of the Honda estate, which her vehicle hit head-on.

Mrs Murray, who is seriously ill in hospital, drove the wrong way down the M65 and crashing head on into another car, police said.

A large section of the westbound M65 had to be closed for more than four hours yesterday, causing traffic chaos.

The eastbound carriageway was also shut for around half an hour to allow an air ambulance to land and take the pensioner to hospital.

Police said a number of motorists tried to escape the congestion by turning around and driving the wrong way down the M65 themselves.

Mrs Murray was in a ‘serious but stable’ condition in hospital.

Police said her Vauxhall Corsa was travelling on the westbound carriageway between Junction 12 at Nelson and 13 at Barrowford, at around 11.30am.

The Barrowford woman’s car smashed head-on into a Honda estate being driven by a 52-year-old man, officers said.

The man, also of Barrowford, was treated at Royal Blackburn Hospital for minor injuries, including a cut hand, before being discharged shortly after.

Mrs Murray was trapped in her car, suffering from serious arm injuries as well as shock.

Paramedics administered pain relief before transporting her to Royal Blackburn Hospital in just four minutes.

She was stable and able to talk to members of her family in hospital, according to police.

Sergeant Ian Milnes, of Lancashire Motorway Police, said: “This incident is being treated very seriously.

“We are now looking into how the woman ended up driving the wrong way along the motorway.”

The westbound section between 12 and 13 was partially re-opened with traffic restricted to one lane until just after 3pm, before fullly re-opening at around 4.30pm.

Air ambulance staff said the same journey by road would have taken more than 25 minutes North West Air Ambulance Charity Chief Executive Lynda Brislin said: “This is where the air ambulance comes into its own getting somebody seriously injured to hospital within minutes.

"This often makes a huge difference in the patient’s ability to make a quicker recovery.”

"Air ambulance staff said the same journey by road would have taken more than 25 minutes" This is the problem now. We have to rely on a charity funded from private donations in an emergency like this. A journey by road to the now defunct BGH would be under 10 minutes. Thanks East Lancs NHS and the Labour Party.

I have utmost respect for the air ambulance guys. Many people wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for their hard work and dedicatio.

And how exactly DO you end up driving the wrong way on the motorway?

Although I feel very sorry for this lady and I really hope she makes a full recovery soon I think something needs to be done about this type of incident and soon. Driving tests should be imperative once you get to a certain age. I think they should be tested on their knowledge of roads, motorways, dual carraige ways, even roundabouts etc. This accident could have been a whole lot worse.

Shame for the old lady. Greater shame for all those faced with her heading straight for her.

Its not the first time this sort of thing has happened, and it wont be the last.

I agree with LadyB28. There should be regular checks for people as they get older. My father is in his 80s and is still 'allowed' to drive. Put it this way. I wouldnt like to be on the same stretch of road as him !
I wouldnt like to deprive people of the freedom that driving gives them, however, if the driver is getting 'confused' its time to hang up the driving gloves

I think that the lady should be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention. Lets face it, if this was a young driver then they would have been in serious trouble and certainly banned. Why is this not the case for these dangerous old drivers?
To the man in the volvo: i wish you a speedy recovery aand hope you do get well soon.

I would like to think that charges are pressed against this woman. Local lady who managed to get on the wrong side of the carriegway is beyond me. Feel sorry for the other person involved through no fault of his own, and also to other that witness the accident. Lancashire constabulary set a example please and fine and ban the person responsible for this outrageous inconsiderate act.

it was mayhem on the roads in nelson and colne with motorway shut and bypass being resurfaced if someone had been taken seriously ill yesterday in nelson or colne it would have taken at least an hour to get to blackburn it took us 35 mins to get out of nelson

Wow 35 whole minutes to get out of Nelson you poor thing!

The lady in question may still be critically ill in hospital. At least wait until she's out before facing questions from the police!

I agree with DogsB*****, why is this vital ambulance service not funded by the government? It has proved its worth in peoples lives many times over. They seem to be able to fund speeding cameras, SPEX on a nationwide basis all in the name of safety and reduction of road deaths - pray tell how is the Air Ambulance different?

60 ?!!! You are obviously very young. Most peoples faculties dont start to go until in their 70s. Therefore 70 should be the strart point for compulsory annual tests

Terrible error by this woman which thankfully didn't result in her killing anyone.
Hopefully she recovers to be taken to court and have her licence permanently revoked.
100% respect to the air ambulance guys and girls -- how they landed where they did is beyond me -- very impressive.
Absolute disgrace that this isn't funded by the government when you look at the crap they throw money at.
