BURNLEY'S The Calico Group has won a major national award its safe house for victims of domestic abuse in memory of murder victim Jane Clough.

The first refuge in the North of England for women in fear who also have additional complex needs took a top prize in the UK Housing Awards at the London's Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London.

The safe house for women and children at risk of domestic violence Jane's Place' won the category for 'Outstanding approach to meeting specialist housing needs (under 5,000 homes)’ category.

Developed by social housing provider Calico Homes and the group specialist SafeNet Domestic Abuse Services the refuge was named after Miss Clough 26, from Barrowford, repeatedly stabbed by her ex-partner Jonathan Vass outside Blackpool Victoria Hospital as she arrived at work in 2010.

During 2011/12, 41per cent of referrals to SafeNet because had to be refused of complex needs, meaning tvulnerable women and children had to remain in dangerous homes.

This need inspired Calico Homes and Safenet to create the 15-flat Jane’s Place.

The UK Housing Awards judges said: “SafeNet had a really clear sense of purpose, driven by not wanting to turn away the most vulnerable women.

“They tackled a problem which looked insoluble and found a solution.”
