A FIELD could become a bustling camp site with education activities for youth groups, if plans are approved.

Entitled the Seven Acre Project, it would be based on land opposite Ing Farm, in Colne Road, Barrowford.

Oil industry engineer David Whitehead, who has more than 25 years’ experience with the Air Training Corps and has trained cadets on their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions up to gold standard, has submitted the plans.

Apart from the camping and caravan site, there would also be a pond, out-buildings and site manager’s office. Organisers are keen to develop an orchard to produce fruit and vegetables to either sell on site or at local farmers’ markets.

The camping and caravan site would help subsidise the educational activities, the planning agents said.

Planning agent John Summers Associates said: “The benefits to society are a facility that can be used by youth groups, Scouts, guides, cadets as either a training facility or a place to gain self-esteem through team building.

“School groups can see and gain practical experience of how food is grown, how the land is tended and how it is changed into food.

“Individuals or groups with physical impairments can be accommodated to work and train in the adapted facilities especially for the purpose.

“The camping and the caravanning are the cash generators to facilitate the other activities on site until they start to generate their own revenue stream.”

The Air Training Corps have offered to help with the construction of raised beds within the holdings as part of their Duke of Edinburgh service.

The group will then return as campers to practise for the DoE expedition bronze level and to train new cadets in the skills of camp craft.

The plans will be decided by Pendle Council later this year.
