Barnoldswick war memorial to get facelift
3:55pm Monday 16th July 2012 in Barnoldswick
A £10,000 scheme to refurbish Barnoldswick War Memorial has been unveiled.
The draft plan to open up a new entrance to the memorial from the Wellhouse Road car park and provide granite plaques to inscribe additional names, together with a refurbishment of the area, is the subject of a three-week consultation.
If the scheme is agreed, it is hoped hat work could be carried out before Remembrance Day this year.
Coun David Whipp said: “The work would allow services at the War Memorial to be conducted from the car park side, rather than on Wellhouse Road.
The work would also open up views of the memorial from Fernlea Avenue.
“One of the large birch trees around the memorial would need to be removed to create space for the proposed new entrance. Other trees would be pruned back and shrubs would be renewed and replanted.
“The flags and set paved areas would be pointed and new drainage provided. An electricity supply would be installed for a public announcement system to be used at services.
“A new entrance would would allow better disabled access to the memorial.”
He said some existing disabled parking bays would need to be relocated within the car park.
Councillors on Pendle Council’s area committee have already agreed to remove recycling skips near the memorial and relocate them on to the Rainhall Road car park.
Full details of the proposal can be viewed at www.visitbarnoldswick.co.uk and at the Rainhall Centre.
Drop-in sessions where residents can give their views will be held at the centre on Thursday and Friday. Anyone wishing to comment can e-mail David .whipp@dsl.pipex.com.
