ABOUT 30 new jobs could be created in Barnoldswick after budget supermarket Aldi announced plans to open a store in the town.

Developer Pendle Projects wants to build a 10,000 sq ft store on land off Skipton Road and West Close Road.

Plans for a 35,000 sq ft Tesco superstore in the town were submitted to Pendle Council last year, but Aldi said those plans were too big for the town.

A spokesman for Pendle Projects, on behalf of Aldi, said: “We are aware there is a planning application in for a large Tesco store.

"We believe this is too big and we have therefore designed this much smaller store which we think will complement rather than compete with the offer from existing traders and help retain the character of the town.”

The site for the store is mostly vacant, although there are some existing businesses, which Pendle Projects hopes to work with to relocate.

The application also includes a 71-space car park.

The spokesman said Aldi does not sell many of the non-food products that can be bought in the town-centre shops, so will not be competing directly with local specialist shops.

A spokesman for Smith Planning Consultancy, acting for the developer, said: “Increased shopping choice in Barnoldswick is vital in helping it to compete with other towns.

“This would encourage local shoppers to stay local.

“It is crucial the size of any new store is appropriate to Barnoldswick.

“We will soon be consulting with people to seek the views of the wider community.
