Asda in talks to open new store in Barnoldswick

STORE wars could be on the cards in Barnoldswick after talks were held over a planned new Asda store.

The news comes just weeks after rivals Tesco submitted an application to Pendle Council on part of the L&P Springs site at Wellhouse Road.

Asda bosses met with Barnoldswick Town councillors last week to discuss their proposed plans to build on the Old Gas Works Site in Skipton Road, just yards away from the site earmarked by Tesco.

This new proposal is understood to be for a 9,000sqft store that would see the rundown old gas works finally tied up after years of complaints.

Coun David Whipp, who is on the town council, said: “Barnoldswick Town Council is planning to consult with all residents and people affected by both planning applications before making its views known to Pendle Borough Council.”

If the store is given the green light it could open up dozens more jobs.

However, concerns are growing among local traders who fear two superstores could kill off Barnoldswick's small independent traders.

Martin Johnson, of Barnoldswick Chamber of Trade, said: “We have heard talk from town councillors about talks with Asda and it’s a matter which will be discussed at our meeting on February 6.

“Our position on the Tesco application is that traders are strongly opposed to an out of town superstore which would be hugely detrimental to a host of traders in the town.”

A spokesman from Pendle Council said: “As far as we are aware the application for a new Tesco superstore in Barnoldswick is still proceeding.”

If you don't want your town centre and local shops alive - keep them out.

Most Barlick residents I talk to WANT another supermarket in Barnoldswick.
I personally shop out of town every week, a new store would keep me in town and maybe shop a little in town,
So please bring it on!!!

Competition is good for customers.

Not really, you end up with a cartel.

This is the quickest way to close down the small shops in the town.
I don't live in the town, so it will not affect me, it's the people's choice.
From my experiences in Burnley and Nelson, I never use Tesco, or Asda. Both shops are over-priced, and in the national press they never do a price comparison, for grocery prices with Lidl, or Aldi. Also the brands from these two shops, are more often liked by the tasting panel.
The special prices at these two shops for vegetables and fruit, are well below what Asda and Tesco charge.
Another trick, which they both use, is the famous half price trick.
Here they claim to have reduced the product to half price, (bottles of wine are the favourite), but even at half price,
it is still more expensive than say, Lidl or Aldi.
They get round this con, by selling the product at the high price in some remote part of the country, where nobody buys it anyway. As long as it has been sold at ONE of their shops, nobody can touch them.
The other famous con trick is when they build the Tesco supermarket. Here they build the supermarket larger than the plan, or not to the original plan. When the council point this out to them, they say the changes, if alterations are required, will put people out of work, or reduce the number of staff required. So the council feel guilty if they stand up to them.
This was the con used at Stockport, next to the M60.
So, if you want two supermarkets in your town, both of which have sharp business practices, vote to have them. It's your choice.

i agree with tony if you want to save money on your weekly shop shop at the discount stores aldi or lidl . i always shop at aldi due to the fact i can save between £20-£30 a week.I've shopped at the big stores but i to have seen the big price difference and for taste i believe theres no difference to the expensive brands sold in these larger stores.

Some of these supermarket planning guys are more slippery than a greased eel.
