THE inaugural batch of beer by a new microbrewery proved a ‘bitter-sweet sensation’ when it sold out in just 45 minutes.
Barlick Brewery, whose owners say is the first such enterprise to be registered in Pendle for more than 40 years, have been developing their ale at the Greyhound pub in Barnoldswick.
Owners of the pub, Don Hinchcliffe and Chris Storey, brought in the expertise of pub regular and amateur brewer Mark Harrison to create the ale.
Don and Chris bought the local in 2010 saving it from developers who wanted to knock it down to replace it with houses.
Don said the launch of the Barlicker Bitter was an overwhelming success with all 72 pints of the first barrel, or firkin as its known in the trade, selling out within the first hour.
He said: “My arm was aching because I pulled so many pints in a short time.
“The idea for the microbrewery came after speaking to Mark and realising he had 10 years’ experience in small-scale brewing.
“We have the capacity to brew three barrels a week and hope to have fresh supplies of Barlicker by the weekend.”
The beer is described as a ‘session bitter’ with a 3.9 per cent alcohol content.
Don revealed that the brewery had plans for a second brand and could even expand to distribute to other outlets. “We’re going to do a lighter beer called Hare of the Dog in the coming months,” he said.
“And we’re taking a barrel to the Pendle Beer festival in Colne in early February.
“If things go well we could we’ll hopefully get out our beer out to more establishments than the Greyhound.”
