Campaign launched against Barnoldswick Tesco superstore plans

FUTURE? Artist’s impression of how the new Tesco store in Barnoldswick would look FUTURE? Artist’s impression of how the new Tesco store in Barnoldswick would look

A CAMPAIGN has been launched against plans for a new Tesco superstore in Barnoldswick.

The Friends of the Earth and Barnoldswick and West Craven Chamber of Trade have launched the campaign, which also aims to promote the town.

The Town, Independents, Community (TIC) campaign seeks to raise awareness about Barnoldswick as a vibrant, unique town.

TIC spokesman Jane Wood said: “Barnoldswick has a fantastic range of small businesses which contribute so much to the local economy and community.

“We do not want Barlick to become a clone town like so many others sadly have as a result of a large superstore being built.

“For residents in the immediate area, the price of their properties would be reduced by at least ten per cent.”

Campaigners have also highlighted concerns about increased traffic on narrow roads, which was raised by residents at a two-day consultation carried out by Tesco in July.

They also said a survey done by Pendle Council concluded that the area had sufficient retail trade and a superstore would divert trade from existing businesses.

Mrs Wood said: “We should prize the personal friendly service of this town and use it or lose it.”

Tesco has submitted a planning application to build a new superstore in the town, which could create more than 160 jobs.

The applicants are seeking permission for a 3,344 square metre foodstore at the site of manufacturer L & P Springs, at the junction of Wellhouse Road and Skipton Road.

Tesco’s agent, Savills Commercial, said the proposed development would reduce people’s need to travel, which could have wider benefits for other businesses within the town.

Barlick centre is ok to go for a coffee or a few bits and bats. Even the co-op doesn't stock much variety. We have to go to Skipton or Colne to do a proper shop. It will save us time and Petrol WHEN Tesco finally arrives!!

Tesco saves people money? What a laugh.

The lemmings who flock to Tesco in their droves get exactly what they deserve.

Surely it will promote some competition for the Co-op so they will have to pull their socks up. Visited the Co-op and it is in need of a face lift!

Bring it on tesco best thing that could happen in town all we have is nail shops cafes hairdressers and delis I wonder if the other deli owners had a campaign when the new one opened its just plain competition I wonder what the result would be if there was a vote of all house holders for or against tesco, a lot of the shop owners are from out of town anyway

It will do barlick good. At the moment everyone goes out of town for their weekly shop to asda/morrisons etc and then they pop into burnley or skipton while they are out. This will keep people in barlick and they will still nip into the town centre instead of going out of town. The shopkeepers are scared they will have to open all day saturday and wont be able to charge extortionate prices.Look at Skipton, it has a morrisons and tesco and its thriving.

Barlick 3:00 on a Saturday..... Most local shops have shut, except (among others) 2 Cafe's (good ones I might add) and a florist, greengrocers, shoe shop & pet shop still open as is the Shambles, card shop & newsagents. Where do you go after 5:00pm if you need something in Barlick? Definitely not the overpriced Co-op. There is a new Spar opening soon, which will help create competitive prices. I agree that supermarkets can kill off some small businesses, but a little more input from some of the shops that are complaining (most of which are specialist shops, with the lines Tesco don't carry) and opening 'til a decent time on a weekend may convince shoppers to visit and spend more money............. I like shopping in Barlick for things I need, those I can;t get, I'll buy at local supermarkets or even on Skipton market. Now there's an idea........why not have a weekly open market on the square? Limited lines only of course!!!

We need to keep people in Barlick so local businesses can survive Tesco don't do flowers for weddings or fancy arrangements for anniversarys ,they sell produce that everyone is buying OUT OF TOWN Yes it's happening every day of the week .I say yes to Tesco bring it on let's have change in Barlick make it modern .👍👍👍👍 top shopper

Go to the tescopoly website. Look how Tesco treats people, how they destroy towns so there is NO competition and lie to you about their products, prices and intentions.

It is idiotic to invite this destructive corporation anywhere near our town. It is not modernising, it is destroying us.

If u want this u deserve a town of take aways and charity shops. Before replying check the facts please

Why dosen't everybody get off their high horses and accept BARNOLDSWICK NEEDS CHANGE!!! -

POINTS:

1. It will create needed jobs

2. It will bring people in from the surrounding villages

3. The CO-OP needs competition - they have got away with overcharging for far too long

4. Tescos help the local community

5. As previous new supermarkets have proved in other areas - it helps the Communit

6. 99% of people in Barnoldswick who have cars shop outside the town - dosen't this tell you something I would estimate at least 50% would use the new facility saving on fuel costs!!

7. The people that already shop in the local shops will still shop there - and they will have new customers from trade outside.

8. Barnoldswick looks very shoddy with boarded up pubs and an influx of take-aways - Tesco will help improve the town centre.

Finally why are people moaning - every time something new is put on the cards people moan - ok if you want to leave it as it is let it be - BARNOLDSWICK IS A SINKING TOWN!! - Who is investing in the town lately? - Who I forgot all our hard earned council tax goes into paying for a bus stop that has cost the earth. etc. - Help the town - create jobs - bring people in and let them spend here - Barnoldswick Needs To Come Into The Current Century and not dwell in the past!!

gpp, can you elaborate on how Tesco helps a local community?

It should be obvious to anyone that Tesco are only interested to helping themselves.
