Super-sleuth teenager foiled East Lancashire stolen goods plot

A TEENAGER turned super-sleuth after seeing car headlights down a remote country lane close to where a burglary had recently taken place.

Blackburn magistrates heard the 16-year-old cycled then walked to investigate, at the same time calling the farmer on his mobile.

He got within 10 feet of the car and saw a man recovering a mountain bike and a chain saw from under a bush.

The boy retreated before calling his dad who picked him up and the two of them followed the car, eventually guiding the police who arrested the driver.

Michael John Haggerty, 49, of Powell Street, Barnoldswick, admitted handling stolen goods.

He was made subject to community supervision for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs.

Haggerty was stopped on January 24 and the property in the back of his vehicle had been stolen from farm buildings on January 17.

Deborah Morgan, defending, said Haggerty had already spent a week in custody following the incident in Gisburn.

“All the property has been returned to its owner,” she added.
