A BARNOLDSWICK care home has been told to improve standards after an inspection found a number of health and social care breaches.

A report published by the Care Quality Commission into Cravenside Care Home for Older People in Lower North Avenue, found that four out of five key areas require improvement.

The 44-bed care home, which provides care to older people with a range of needs including those with dementia, was inspected by the commission on October 15 and 16.

Despite residents at the home saying they were either ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’, the home has been told to take action to meet regulations of the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

The report read: “The service was not consistently safe. While people told us they felt safe, our findings demonstrated people were not adequately protected against the risks associated with the unsafe management of medicines.”

It went on to say: “We noted the medication records were well presented and organised. However, we found prescribed nutritional supplements and creams were not not well managed. One person had not received any supplements for six days because the home had none in stock.”

In addition to this It was also noted that staff had not received an annual appraisal in 2014.

Other shortfallings included a lack of mental capacity tests, which are used to assess people’s ability to make decisions for themselves and their ability to consent to care and treatment.

The report also highlighted gaps in record keeping and that people were not routinely involved in the care planning process.

“People had individual personal plans that were centred on their needs and preferences. However, we noted one person’s care plan required significant updating following a changing needs.

“While, the plan was updated by the registered manager during the inspection, we also noted other gaps in record keeping in respect of positional change charts and the application of creams.”

Although enforcement action has not been taken, the CQC said it would check that action was taken by the home to meet legal requirements.
