Nelson flat closed down by police
7:44am Saturday 21st July 2012 in Pendle
A FLAT which had become a magnet for criminal behaviour, drug use and disorder, has been closed down by police.
The closure order comes after a catalogue of complaints from neighbours about the flat, on Bracewell Close, Nelson.
The reports included serious nuisance and disorder including drunken parties, criminal damage, loud swearing and shouting.
On Thursday, Reedley Magistrates’ Court granted an anti-social behaviour closure order.
Police officers and Housing Pendle provided the court with evidence of the extent and impact of the disorder.
The bench was also presented with a number of witness statements from those living nearby.
The court ordered the property to be closed down for three months, during which time anyone found entering the property could face arrest, fines or imprisonment.
The flat has now been boarded up with the details of the closure order posted on the door.
Anti social behaviour manager PC Karen Isherwood said: “This flat had become a nightmare for the community, making their lives a misery.
“Local residents spent much of their time in fear of what was happening or likely to happen.
“Some were afraid to go out of their flats and when they did go out, they were worried about returning. Known criminals were congregating there and there were all-night parties.
“The flat was used for drug use and neighbours ran the gauntlet of abuse and intimidation.
“The closure order should now bring the those people some much needed respite.”
PC Isherwood added: “The tenant has been warned repeatedly about the consequences of his behaviour and I hope it lets those causing major anti-social behaviour know that they may be taken to court and asked to leave their home.”
