Elderly targeted in Brierfield ‘sponsorship’ fraud
12:10pm Friday 15th June 2012 in Pendle
FRAUDSTERS are being hunted who have been operating door-to-door in East Lancashire.
Police said there have been reports of people cold-calling elderly residents and asking for sponsorships for non-existent events.
They have been claiming to be completing challenges, with all funds raised being donated to local charities.
Reports of the problem have been made in Brierfield, where police are investigating claims that people have been asked to hand over cash on the doorstep.
Officers investigating are appealing to people in the Brierfield and surrounding areas to come forward if they have experienced anything similar.
Complaints have been made by residents in the Halifax Road area.
A police spokesperson said, “If anyone has experienced anything similar then we would urge them to contact police. We would always advise people if someone calls at your home, if you are not expecting them, then do not feel obliged to answer the door.
“If you are concerned about anyone who has called at your address under similar circumstances, contact the police.”
Information can be passed to police by calling 101.
