Pendle offenders complete more than 10,000 hours in community payback

OFFENDERS in Pendle have completed more than 10,000 hours of community payback in the last 10 months.

And now, as more work is set to be completed, community payback organisers are asking the public to suggest projects for offenders to complete.

All project suggestions must be for public, charity or non-profit community benefit.

Community payback practice manager Lorraine Slater said: “All the projects completed by offenders combine hard work and the chance for offenders to develop important life skills.

“They help to reduce the risk of re-offending, making our communities safer.”

Since Pendle Council joined forces with Lancashire Probation Trust in January, offenders have been working with the Neighbourhood Pride teams to clean up grot spots in Brierfield, Nelson and Colne.

Coun James Starkie said: “Community payback is an innovative way of making offenders pay back for the crimes they’ve committed.

“And the benefits are real.”

Don't see these critters cleaning up in the Cloverhill area of Nelson, Cat-steps at the end of Cloverhill Rd, spare land at the end of Brunswick St, path leading to Walverden Reserviour needs pot-hols filling in plenty of Dog Sh-t to clear up all over Cloverhill this would keep the little blitters busy for more hours stop them re-offending would be too nackered to go out on the take after this lot.

Could have been a much more interesting piece of journalism. 10,000 hours in 10 months equals 1000 hour per month. How about telling us the number of offenders who have taken part, how many hours on average they do each week and how long they stay on this programme. Judging by what I have seen it was a few people wandering around Witton Country Park picking up SOME of the litter, but walking past about 25% of it. Maybe I am just cynical but I sometimes think that the people put in charge of these teams should be industry managers who have been made redundant and have a good idea of how to encourage people to put in a good day's work.
