East Lancs millionaire to launch 'Bank of Dave'

A SELF-MADE millionaire from Colne is to attempt to set up his own bank from scratch, in a bid to support East Lancashire businesses.

David Fishwick, who run the biggest minibus firm in the UK, plans to give loans to businesses struggling to get help from the financial big boys.

The set-up of the bank will be filmed by Channel 4 for an observational series called Bank of Dave which will follow the entrepreneur as he tries to get the venture into profit in 180 days.

Dave has rented premises in Burnley town centre and is due to open for business in late September or October.

The three-part TV show is set to air next spring and a book deal on the venture is in negotiation.

David, 40, said: “There are businesses and individuals out there who are hardworking and honest but through no fault of their own, they can no longer get loans.

“They are being ignored and let down by the banks, while bankers still pay themselves enormous salaries and bonuses.

“My bank may be tiny but it will be better than a high street bank. I want to show how banking can be socially responsible and not greedy and reckless and I’m going to do what the high street banks just can’t bring themselves to do, give away any profits to charity.”

The venture will see him guarantee and underwrite all the banking activity from his personal fortune.

He added that the that the idea for the venture came during the economic crisis of 2008/09 when banks were reluctant to give loans to his customers to buy minibuses, so he decided to lend the money himself.

Regardless to what you think of him, there's no way this man can be slated for trying to give back to his local community in a sector which is currently a NIGHTMARE!
I run my own company, and even though I don't need funding I speak from experience and industry knowledge.
Anything that can be done to support local, north west businesses should be welcomed with open arms. Period.

I totally agree MJA.

Good luck Dave.

Anyone who talks against you on this are obviously the same jealous muppets who couldn't succeed themselves so they have to try to drag you down to make themselves feel better about themselves.

Just try your best to ignore them. I know it's hard.

All the best to you on this venture.

What a marvelous idea. Good on you David. The couple who won 66 million this year could have helped an abundance of businesses. I always said to myself if I won millions I would create businesses just to employ those that are desparate to work. You worked hard to get your millions and are willing to share that and you solely deserve the support from everyone in East Lancashire. Well done you, you are a diamond in this society and I hope you succeed

This has the makings of being something quite unusual: a banker with both a heart and a brain.

I echo the sentiments of other supportive posters above and wish David Fishwick all the very best with his new venture. I hope it succeeds.
