Nelson residents protest over 'little river' near homes

RESIDENTS have hit out at United Utilities for not fixing a leaking water pipe which is creating a ‘little river’ close to their homes.

Mohammed Ashraf said the leak seems to be coming from a pipe at his end-terrace property in Berkeley Street, Nelson.

And it is causing pools of water to form in the cobbled alley behind Brunswick Street and next to his house.

He said engineers had visited the site but hadn’t fixed the leak and told him residents would have to arrange for the work and foot the bill.

The water firm said the leak could be underground on the internal common supply pipe, which is jointly owned by the 17 householders on the stretch, and the suspected location makes it difficult for engineers to access it.

But Mr Ashraf believes the firm should be more keen to fix the leak, regardless of where it lies, in light of the hosepipe ban.

As a result of the leaking pipe, large pools of water appear in the alley even when it has not rained for days.

In addition, Mr Ashraf said hardly any water at all runs from the taps in his house.

Cloverhill councillor Eileen Ansar is supporting a residents’ campaign to have the leak fixed by United Utilities.

She said: “It seeps down like a little river coming from beneath the houses.

"It’s a disgrace that they won’t fix it. They pay their water rates, so it should be repaired.

“We have a hosepipe ban at the moment and yet they are not going to do anything about this.”

A UU spokesman said engineers would re-visit the site today in an attempt to pinpoint the leak.

He said: “After early inquiries, engineers believe the leak is probably underground on the internal common supply pipe, jointly owned by the house-holders.

“We believe the leak is under a house on the street, not easily accessible.

"Further leak detection work is required to pinpoint the location.

“Our free repair service is only possible if the leak is in an open space that we can get to.

“If this one is under a house, a different solution will be required.”

Can't say I blame UU for backheeling this one. To repair a leak under a house would be a nightmare of a job, and will probably need the resident to move out, (along with moving furniture & lifting carpets etc.
And who would pay for that then?
If the leak is on a PRIVATE supply pipe, which can be accessed easily then UU will fix it for free. Otherwise it's up to the joint owners of the pipe. Sounds fair enough to me.

The Water company (u.u) are responsible for delivering potable water to your stop tap (at the boundary of your property) The pipework beyond the stoptap is the owners responsibilty. The headline should read "Consumers waste water during a hosepipe ban" , Get ready to (rightfully) recieve a "Defective Fittings" note (enactment of a by-law) and the subsequent court costs. If you are served by a "shared service" (1stop tap per terrace block) then the cost is served upon ALL those servewd by the defective pipe. Councillor Ansar should realy research her campaigns a bit more.

Re: selling our water down south... It does not occur, It has never occured. If it was being sent down south then it would be just as easy to reverse flow and send it up north. (read my comment from wednesday re resevoir levels)

By the way folks, It's people such as the ones complaining here that cause your bills to rise, the legal cost incurred by u.u. having to fight tooth and nail with folk who seem to falsly beleive that repairs to their property are somehow not their resonsibilty.

you can buy insurance from UU to cover this sort of mishap - they send letters out to everyone and they tell you in that letter that the pipes on the road and upto your property are their responsibility and them inside your property are your responsibility - just like you can insure your car and property/contents but if you dont want to take responsibility dont moan when it goes wrong. Your problem Berkerly Street stop whining and trying to get everything for free pay up like the rest of us

Irrespective of who is liable for the repair, if it were my house i would be getting it sorted, pronto and sort out who is liable later.
-
the unseem damage from a long term leak under the foundations of a building could, ultimately, be very expensive or even catastophic to the building!
-
If any insurance is held on the building he has also now publicly demonstrated he is aware of a fault and they could claim he was negligent and not pay out too.
