Nearly 100 motorists stopped in Nelson police operation

NEARLY 100 motorists were stopped in a crackdown on dangerous or irresponsible drivers in Nelson.

Operation Peardrop is designed to give motorists a bitter taste of what life could hold if they don’t amend their driving habits and targets people not wearing seatbelts or using a mobile phone, as well as other offences.

The motorists were offered two choices, pay a fine and have three points on their licence or attend a presentation on driving at Nelson fire station.

School children also spoke to the drivers who were stopped to tell them the danger they were putting others in.

Of the motorists stopped, 40 opted for tickets, 40 were spoken to by school children and 15 attended a 45-minute presentation.

The presentation, on the risk and reality of accidents, was run by fire and police officers who deal first hand with such incidents.

Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant Damian Pemberton said: “Some motorists chose to pay the fine which is their choice but a significant proportion opted for the presentation.

“The presentation was very impactive and the officers delivering it were front line officers who regularly deal with road traffic collisions so they really knew what they were talking about.

“I am in no doubt that it will prove just as effective, perhaps more so, than a fine and penalty points.”

Between April 2008 and 2009, 969 people were killed or seriously injured on Lancashire’s roads, with a further 6,573 suffering minor injuries.

Steven Morgan, watch manager at Nelson Fire Station, said: “A number of these people would have been spared the misery of these injuries or have completely escaped injury if for example, they had been wearing seatbelts.

”We know from experience that the non wearing of seatbelts is an issue locally which is why we are initially targeting the Nelson area.”

Last year the Lancashire Telegraph launched a campaign to educate youngsters and their parents about the importance of belting up, while encouraging passengers and drivers to wear seatbelts however long, or short, a journey.

Police have vowed to continue to target motorists who continue to break the law.

Don't hold your breath Rayzer, it's all spin making us think they're doing a job, and How much did the Advert cost us the tax payer? Yeah we pay your wages. Do the job your paid to do,

Shane, sorry, I'm not clear on your position. Do you reckon we should be provided with seat belts on a train? ( that will mean a SEAT, too ). Curious to know if this argument has any support anywhere.

""School children also spoke to the drivers who were stopped to tell them the danger they were putting others in.""
Not particularly against the excercise to remind motorists of their responsibilities but using children in such a way is a very tricky route to be taking. Didn't Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia make use of children in such a way.

Well it is time for the comment of ' you could'nt make it up'. Police stop nearly a hundred criminals, committing moving motoring offences... then they offer them a choice.. ? Am I reading this correctly ? My question is, what about the forty motorists who decided to pay the fine? Could they not spare the time for that forty-five minute presentation? Too busy working on their drug dealing business, were they, or too busy making suicide belts for their cousins, or what about that tied up kid in the boot who had insulted their sister? Did the Police really make the correct checks? Is the driver really who he says he is ? Does he have a right to be in this country? Insurance sir ? Yes, I will bring it to the station within five days... ( when I've printed one off from the Internet ) Which Dixon of Dock Green copper thought up this little scam ? Probably one who hopes to put it onto his CV at his Superintendant interview. Nearly a hundred motorists stopped ? Nearly a hundred motorists driving about with a smile on their face, having outwitted the plod. Get real, There is a bunch of motorists out there, who just don't care which motoring laws they break, and evidently, the cops stopped them.... then let them go. This country has gone to the dogs. ( Oh sorry, not allowed to mention dogs, it upsets a certain section of the community ).

this is a joke 12 days ago a driver overtook a row of cars on the wrong side of the road, didnt stop at the jusction turned right into the wrong side of the road straight into me wriring my car off and leaving me with serious chest injuries which 12 later i am still in agony, he admitted 100% it was is fault had to 6 witnesses and traffic police who attended said they could not charge him with dangerous driving only due care and attention, how bad do you have to drive for it to be dangerous i suppose under the circumstances i was lucky he was insured and stayed at the scene

burner. No I'm not saying that seat belts should be supplied on trains. I'm just saying do we have to go through the reasons why trains don't have seat belts but cars do?

Personally I'm sick & tired of seeing unrestrained kids in the back of cars, which admittedly seems more prevelant in the Asian community. I've seen it many times woman sat holding babies, young kids jumping around & too many kids/adults sat in the back. This infuriates my as it only takes a small accident to cause major injury. But this doesn't seem to be a problem to the police, as more & more seem to do it. I hope these cars where also targeted. I do agree with the campain if safety was an issue, seat belts, phones etc but the people caught should have been give other days as options to view the 45 min Program as alot of people would be working etc so therefore only giving the ticket & points option, so therefore it's unfair.

Wellingtonia you really do show how thick you are on here....lets deal with your post on a point by point basis...

1 - yes drug dealing is prevalent in East Lancs just as it is in Liverpool, Wigan, Salford, are you trying to tell us that all those stopped were drug dealers???

2 - making suicide belts for their cousins? I didn't know that suicide belts were manufactured in Nelson, if you know something that the rest of us don't then please do disclose your information to the Special Branch of the Police who deal with terrorist threats, they will be out raiding houses like a shot even if they find nothing there...

3 - I will not even bother to respond to "does he even have the right to be in this country..."

4 - Insurance...it cannot be printed off the internet, the Police have a National Database which tells them each & every car's insurance status just by reading the plate, they do not need to hand out "producers" i.e. where the driver has to produce his insurance or other docs such as MOT

Next time think before you put a post out and stop showing us how ignorant you are...it's embarrassing for the indigenous community.

P.S. Akon stop being undemocratic by telling people to bog off on here....haha you hypocrite

Shane, if you have ever been thrown off your feet whilst standing on a local train when the brakes are applied you would have no other thought than, " if only I had a seat". Let alone a belt, should there be a derailment. Inter city trains go at well over 100mph. Not wearing a belt on a car is total stupidity, but not all car accidents are high speed, most occur within a built up area, most train accidents involve a good deal more speed!

Stop posting twice green ganja boy, as for akon he really cannot take defeat. Also why have you named yourself after an rnb singer who was filmed dancing with an underage girl. Is there something you're trying to hint to us?
