Work support for Pendle unemployed

A SCHEME to reduce the number of Pendle residents who are not in work is set to be unveiled.

The initiative is being launched after figures revealed that 18.2 per cent of people are unemployed and claiming benefits.

And in the Southfield ares of Nelson, 41 per cent of 16- to 59-year-olds claim benefits.

Pendle Borough Council hopes its employment strategy scheme will tackle these issues by developing strong partnerships with local organisations and working with employers to identify and fulfil their needs.

In addition, the local authority is increasing the number of adults in work by providing high quality support, linking new employment developments with workless people and actively promoting skills and workforce development in local companies.

Pendle council leader Coun John David said: “For most people, work is the sole means of access to income and wealth. And lack of work is linked to poverty for many individuals and households.

“Those out of work and poverty are highly concentrated in some of our local neighbourhoods, which is why we need to try to do everything that we can to help and support them.”

The local council and government are a disgrace - the area in which I live has over 40% unemployment rate yet they are only just proposing new measures to tackle this. These policies will go nowhere near far enough. My mother is 54 and has been unemployed for 4 months after being made redundant from a job she was in for 12 years. She can't get a job because there are at least 10 people going for every vacancy yet she cannot go on any free courses to help her get a job because she has to be on the dole for at least 6 months. Seriously, why? This does not make sense, the longer you are unemployed the less employable you become and as this is a scheme only for over 50's people should be put on it straight away - unless the local council don't actually want unemployed over 50's to get back into work, because that is how it looks. There are many people on the dole who do not want to work, why are they councils/government not going all out for the people who do? Mr Prentice has a lot to answer for, he has failed the people of this area many times over

Come on now, let's be honest. There are a lot of people who do not want to work. How do I know? Well, I have been involved in schemes designed to get people back to work. They were a waste of taxpayers money.

The ironic thing about all this is that Pendle Council is funding groups such as Brierfield Cyber Cafe to give guidance of how to gain employment etc yet the advisors have no qualification whatsoever with regard to expertise in this field whatsoever. The reason why such groups are being funded is due to the influence and contacts that their trustees have in Pendle Council, I have heard of stories where this establishment does not even open up on time never mind give advice and it is impossible to get hold of the Project Manager!

Dear All, please check the Pendle Council website and have a look at the type of projects that they are funding to reduce worklessness, community cohesion and preventing violent extremism. And you know what it is a big joke. Our new Assistant Chief Executive Mr. George Dodds seems to be following in the same footsteps as his predecessor Mr. Astin handing out money willy nilly to look after his mates. The main beneficiaries seem to be as follows:- Mr. Phil Storey at the Leisure Trust who now seem to be the experts on community cohesion and getting people into employment although one could argue that their leisure facilities were in the third division. We just have to look at the botch up of Mr. Gary Hood at Rossendale don't we. By the way can Nelson Town Council provide me with some funding as me and my mates would like to take their kids to Skegness during the School summer holidays!!!
