COUNCILLORS held a minute’s silence in memory of a man who represented Nelson across six decades.
Before the start of the Nelson Committee meeting on Monday evening, Coun George Adam asked members to observe the tribute to Ken Spence.
Mr Spence was elected to serve on Nelson Council in 1952 and became a member of the original Pendle Council in 1974. He also served on Lancashire County Council between 1985 and 2001. He died on June 31 after a short illness. He was in his mid-eighties.
Mr Spence, of Bentley Street, was a Labour representative and was the Mayor of Nelson between 1966 and 1967.
Originally from County Durham, he moved to Nelson with his late wife Amy in 1948.
He was a former headteacher at Worsthorne County Primary School, in Burnley, and served as a magistrate on the local bench for 30 years .
He leaves two daughters.
