THOUSANDS of Barlick residents could be given green shopping bags by the end of the year.

Town councillor Keith Bailey is looking for volunteers to set up a committee to help with the environmentally friendly bag scheme.

The committee would look at getting funding for the bags, which would be made up of jute or recycled plastic, and methods of distribution.

The plan, the idea of Coun Bailey, is to distribute the bags to every house in Barnoldswick and extend it to Earby if possible.

Coun Bailey is hoping to get the bags out to the residents by the end of the year or at the start of 2009 at the latest.

He said: “I want to get rid of plastic bags because they are the scourge of landfills.

“We want to supply them to every household in Barnoldswick and Earby if possible.

“We are looking for volunteers to help run the scheme, help with funding and maybe even the logo design.”

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Coun Bailey on 01282 852286, email cllr.kbailey@googlemail.com or visit Fun and Games Toy shop in Albert Road.
