MORE than 150 students have gained greater knowledge of the criminal justice system through a series of workshops.
Eight working magistrates from the Pendle area delivered a series of interactive workshops to pupils from West Craven High School, Barnoldswick, giving an insight into a magistrate’s role in society and their responsibilities.
Students in years eight and nine experienced the cases that magistrates are presented with, and have withstood the pressure of deliberating over the moral outcome.
The sessions were arranged by Mr Peter Elgie, a former employee at Rolls-Royce in Barnoldswick and a Justice of the Peace, who now works at the school on a voluntary basis as a teaching assistant.
Teacher Alison Craig said: “Our speaker was very professional and informative, understanding the audience he was speaking to and was able to deliver it in terms the students could easily engage with.
“He provided a valuable insight into the Criminal Justice System and, at the same time, was able to dispel a few myths. The class listened intently throughout the presentation.”
For anybody unable to attend West Craven High School’s recent open evening, there is still an opportunity to book a tour.
