A PARISH council has recommended that a supermarket’s request to sell newspapers be rejected.

Booths in Barrowford submitted a request to remove a section from a planning document which prevented them from selling newspapers and journals.

But the village’s parish council has recommended that Pendle Borough Council, which will make a final decision on the matter next month, should refuse Booths’ request.

Park News, a newsagents across from the supermarket, set up a petition against the proposal as they say it risked the future of their business.

Julie MacAdam, who owns the shop with her partner Chris Riley, said she was pleased with the recommendation but admitted the matter was yet to be decided.

Their petition now has about 1,800 signatures, and 35 people came to show their support for them at Wednesday night’s parish council meeting.

She said: “We’re really delighted with the result, but there’s still the final decision to be made by the borough council.

“The response was amazing from the local community, every seat was taken and there were still people standing.”

Barrowford Western Parishes Committee of Pendle Borough Council will meet on the February 8 when the matter will be decided.
