A 43-YEAR-OLD man was upset when his partner who lived next door finished with him by text message.

Blackburn magistrates heard Lawrence McBride stormed round and barged into her house before punching her and hitting her over the head with a barrel type glass.

McBride, 43, of Craven Street, Brierfield, pleaded guilty to assaulting Annie Higson.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in custody suspended for 12 months, ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work and pay £200 compensation, £85 costs and £115 victim surcharge.

He was made subject to a restraining order for two years which prohibits him from having any contact with the aggrieved.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said having barged into Miss Higson's house McBride threw her against the wall and then punched her on the head.

"He poured a glass of cider over her and then hit her with the glass," said Miss Allan. "He refused to leave and stayed for over an hour trying to persuade her not to call the police. She had to kiss him goodbye but as soon as he left she rang the police."

Ian Huggan, defending, said on the day of the incident the couple had been out together and at some stage she decided the relationship had run its course.

"She sent him a text message to inform him of her decision," said Mr Huggan. "He was asleep and when he woke up he found the message. He was upset and went next-door to find out what was going on. He knows his behaviour after that was not acceptable."
