COUNCILLORS look set to refuse plans to create new apartments above shops on Colne’s high street.

An approach has been made to Pendle Council to purchase the freehold for 39-41 Market Street, the Colne area committee has heard.

Currently the ground floor is occupied by the YMCA charity shop and Greggs.

But the first-floor offices above, overlooking Market Street, have remained vacant for some time.

In a report to councillors, Liberata property official Hywel Lebbon said the party leasing the property wanted to extend the lease, which currently runs to 2077.

Mr Lebbon said the intention was to convert the empty offices into apartments, to either rent out or sell on.

But councillors, who will debate the issue next Thursday, have been recommended to reject the bid, as it may compromise future town centre redevelopment plans.

The future of the town’s former health centre, further along Market Street, is still in the balance.
