A STUDENT is to take part in an international maths challenge.

Lewis Gorton, who attends Colne Primet Academy, was top of the class when he took part in the national maths challenge with 16 year 10 and 11 students.

As part of the UKMT intermediate challenge he had to answer 25 multiple choice problem solving questions in one hour under normal exam conditions.

He will now take part in the next stage - the Kangaroo paper. This is an international challenge, which will see 5,500 of the highest performing pupils from more than 30 countries invited to sit the paper.

The 15 year old said: “I am pleased to get through to the next round of UKMT. I didn’t think I would do it but I succeeded.”

Mrs Leak, head of mathematics and computing said: “I am extremely proud that Lewis has got through to the Kangaroo stage of the competition."
