PEOPLE could be serious injured in a 'dangerous' road if speeding is not tackled, concerned residents have warned.

The Higherford Residents Action Group will be meeting next week to get people’s thoughts on bringing in speed indicators in Barnoldswick Road.

The signs would tell drivers how fast they are going as they approach them.

Chairman Hugh Simpson said speeding had got worse in the road since drivers began using it as a shortcut to Barnoldswick instead of using North Valley Road in Colne where traffic has increased.

Mr Simpson said: “There have been accidents in this road and it’s only a matter of time before we get a really serious one.

“I’ve seen cars going in excess of 40mph when it’s a 30mph road.

“The police have confirmed there is a speeding issue as they have done a check but it isn’t serious enough for anything to be done.

“We recognise that money is tight and staffing has been cut but this road is dangerous.

“Residents have been very concerned about this problem for years now particularly as traffic has increased as a result of those using it as a short cut to Barnoldswick.

“We hope we have a very positive meeting and start to address this problem before someone is very seriously injured.”

In places the road has no pavement on either side increasing fears that a serious accident could soon occur.

The meeting is set to take place on Monday and if enough people agree that action must be taken the group will consider putting money towards speed indicators in the road.

Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson said: “I think the speed which cars travel at in this road is quite alarming.

“I am pleased that the county council is looking at putting average speed cameras in Gisburn Road next to it, but it is clear we also need to tackle speeding in Barnoldswick Road.

“I would urge residents to go along to this meeting and make their views known.

It will take place at 7pm at the Pendle Heritage Centre.
