AN 18-year-old man is in hospital with serious head injuries after a head-on crash in Nelson.

Police said the incident, involving a Suzuki Grand Vitara and a Toyota Yaris, happened in Halifax Road at the junction with Hibson Road at 7am yesterday.

The driver of the Vitara, who is from Nelson, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with serious head injuries where he remains this afternoon. 

The driver of the Yaris, a 61-year-old man from Nelson, suffered whiplash injuries.

Police have issued a witness appeal following the incident.

Sergeant Dave Hurst of the Road Policing Unit said: “This collision has left one man with serious head injuries and I would urge anyone who witnessed what happened to contact us with any information.”

A police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Nelson at 7am yesterday.

"At around 7am on Sunday, November 20, a Toyota Yaris was travelling along Halifax Road towards Hibson Road when it collided head on with a Suzuki Grand Vitara which was turning left from Hibson Road into Halifax Road.  

"The driver of the Toyota, an 18-year-old man from Nelson, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

"The Suzuki driver, a 61-year-old man, suffered whiplash."
