RESIDENTS are set to redouble their efforts to protect a picturesque corner of East Lancashire threatened by developers.
Campaigners from Lidgett and Beyond (L&B) were dismayed when a planning inspector allowed proposals by Junction Properties to build 90 homes on The Rough.
But larger-scale proposals for 270 homes were rejected following a public inquiry and the action group has pledged to do everything it can to preserve the remainder of The Rough and ‘Lidgett Triangle’.
This immediately means lobbying Pendle Council so that the bulk of the area is not allocated for housing in future.
David Cockburn-Price, L&B trustees chairman, said: “We can hold our heads up high after the decision in the knowledge that, had we done nothing, Pendle Borough Council’s Planning Department would have approved the lot.
“So restricting it to only up to 90 houses in the South-Western corner has to be viewed as a success. However this is for access only, so L&B will continue to fight for a site plan and housing design which is both sensitive and appropriate for the Lidgett & Bents Conservation Area.”
Trustees will also be working on measures to enhance the area, which could include unveiling displays and issuing leaflets, illustrating the district’s agricultural and industrial heritage and detailing colourful characters and anecdotes.
Mr Cockburn-Price said: “We need to ensure these precious areas are given the security and status they deserve for the future as part of the upcoming green infrastructure review being carried out.
“We work for the long term benefit of the area, rather than the short-term aims of developers and we look to local politicians for support.”
Another role for L&B will be in shaping the emerging Colne Neighbourhood Plan after signing up to become an associate member of a working party examining the process.
Campaigners raised ten of thousands of pounds for their inquiry battle and have already produced their own 2017 calendar, which is on sale across the Colne area.
Plans are also being pulled together for a Hallowe’en Outdoor Market on October 29.
