A DRAMA student from Nelson was handed three awards at an annual music festival in Colne.

Terry Hall, 17, entered the Luther Greenwood Memorial Festival at The Muni and won the junior solo class for ages up to 18 and the show songs class in the same age group.

The youngster sang Any Dream Will Do from the musical, Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat, and Handel’s Silent Worship to win the accolades.

His performances also earned him the Silverman Shield for the Pendle area competitor with the highest mark.

Mr Hall said he was delighted with his achievement and hoped it would help him take his singing further.

He said: “It’s been a great experience for me. I love singing and acting, and I’m hoping to go to drama school.”

The BTEC performing arts student at Burnley College also sings with the Stage Door theatre company in Colne and is the youngest member of Colne Orpheus Glee Union, the town’s male voice choir.

Other winners in the solo singing classes included Emily Calleja of Colne, Sally Clement from Lothersdale and Kate Overend from Barrowford.

Lance Domingo from Burnley also gained three firsts in the piano classes and Pendle Children’s and Junior Choirs were both winners in their classes.

In the ladies choir class, Nelson beat Carleton but the positions were reversed in the choral cup class.

The speech and drama classes at St John’s Methodist Church, Albert Road, were dominated by Blackburn girl Emily Berry, 13, who scooped eight firsts, ranging from Shakespeare to solo comedy, in her 10 to 13 age group. Her younger sisters Hannah and Grace also won two firsts each.

Eric Beardsworth, festival chairman, said that the adjudicators had been excellent this year. and he hopes that more young people will be encouraged to take part .
