A WARNING has been issued after police found several discarded gas canisters at a picnic site.

Police found 30 empty cannisters, believed to have contained nitrous oxide, whilst on patrol around Stoney Bank Road, Earby.

Police have described the discovery as "frightening" and said they fear the gas could have been taken by somebody driving.

A police spokesman said: “Nitrous Oxide is what may be termed a ‘legal high’ which the police prefer to call an un-controlled substance. The gas is not illegal to possess but it is illegal to sell it to anyone under 18 years of age.

“However, there are very real dangers in taking this gas. There is a risk of death through lack of oxygen to the brain, particularly if taken in an enclosed space or if a substantial amount is taken in a short space of time."

If you have any information regarding the supply of these cannisters or if you have any concerns, please contact your local neighbourhood policing team on 101.
