A PENSIONER died after a car struck him on a school car park.

The 78-year-old man suffered serious head injuries as a result of the collision with a VW Golf, which it is believed was reversing.

The emergency services were called shortly after 4.15pm on Monday following the accident at St Joseph’s RC Primary School in West Close Road, Barnoldswick.

The man, who was understood to be a volunteer at the school and had been delivering an educational trailer, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by ambulance but died from his injuries.

Lancashire Police said that his family were by his side.

Specially-trained family liaison officers were supporting the man’s family and staff at the school, a police spokesman said.

The school announced on its website yesterday that it was closed for the day. It re-opened as usual today.

Head teacher Natalie Wood said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers go out to the gentleman’s family and friends at this sad time.

“We are working closely with the county council and the diocese to ensure we offer our staff the support they need.”

Messages of condolence were posted on social media yesterday for the pensioner who is from Skipton.

People who stopped to look after the man before the emergency services arrived on the scene were also praised.

Writing on Facebook, Donna Shackleton said: “Thinking and praying for his family and all who helped at school and in the community.”

Claire Marie, writing on the St Joseph’s Parents Facebook Page, said: “All my thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family at this very sad time.”

Sgt Adam Dawson, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident which has cost a man his life and we aren’t looking to speak to anyone else in relation to it.

“Both myself and the head teacher Mrs Wood would like to offer our condolences and to thank staff and local residents for their support at this difficult time.”

Cllr Lyle Davy, who represents the area on Pendle Council, said: “I was really shocked when I heard the news and it’s so sad for the children, staff and family involved.

“I want to pass on my sincere condolences to the family.

“It must be very difficult for everybody connected with the school.”
